Understanding the Gyre

“Circle, Wheel, Rose, Gear
Turning all that we hold dear
One for our World, four for Theirs
Four for Crafts we teach our heirs
Eight, our Peoples’ many faces
Eight Paths, too, Magic embraces
Sixteen Ways the Paths entrust
Lest Tempest grind us into dust”

From the Canticle of Teaching

At the center of the gear is the Primord, the material plane of Mnemos. In a ring around the Primord are the four planar realms, which exist in parallel to the Primord. Connected to those planar realms are the Crossroads most often associated with each, domains that also govern Crafting and Resource. Radiating further outward from the center are each of the eight known Lineages, the rivets which hold the Gyre together.

From there are the eight Paths of Magic, each positioned in line with the Lineage who first truly mastered the Path. Finally, within each tooth on the gear’s edge, can be found the two Ways one can walk each Path. Through them all pass the points of the compass, which both ties all these things together and acts as a symbol of order within the chaos.
